The US Department of Homeland Security has adopted a new compact radar system to improve drone-based surveillance operations, particularly in remote border regions. The technology, developed by Massachusetts-based MatrixSpace, will help uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) detect and avoid obstacles when flying beyond the pilot’s direct line of sight, a key requirement for safe drone operations. The project is led by the Department for Homeland Security’s Innovation Hub, HSWERX, which aims to support agencies like Customs and Border Protection in monitoring large, often isolated areas where traditional surveillance methods are impractical.
