We’re excited to finally introduce MatrixSpace to the world and share our vision for the future of intelligent machines. It’s been quite a year since I joined as Vice President of Autonomous Systems.
When I was deciding on the next step in my career, I received a phone call that changed everything. Greg Waters, MatrixSpace’s co-founder and Executive Chair offered me the opportunity to help lead the charge taking MatrixSpace from initial R&D to products. After hearing Greg’s vision for the company, it was an easy decision to make. How often do you get the chance to be a part of a world class leadership team working on products that are poised to change society for the better through collaborative networks of intelligent machines? At this point my career had taken me through a path in defense R&D – working on diverse products such as radar, satellite communications and sensor systems – all the way to designing, building and directing an absolutely one-of-a-kind lab at Northeastern University for drone, autonomy, RF, and AI R&D. It was only through my unique career path working on diverse sets of technology and meeting brilliant people along the way that I felt I was ready to take on the enormous task of building something as ambitious as MatrixSpace had planned. I knew I was in for a crazy ride, but as the saying goes – when there’s a rocket ship to get on, you don’t worry about the seat assignment.
MatrixSpace is bringing to life real-time edge-based machine perception with AI and its ability to sense, detect, track, and classify objects in any situation. Combining industry-leading mmWave sensing and communication with AI edge processing in real-time is a major technology breakthrough with multiple vertical market applications. We started out applying our core concept of collaborative networks of intelligent machines to drones and drone swarms and in one year have now generalized this same concept to many other domains – some of which we never envisioned.
When I joined last September 2021, I had the task of building the product team while simultaneously creating the product roadmap that would realize the company’s core vision to revolutionize the way that intelligent machines sense and communicate with each other and with people. It’s highly collaborative networks of multi-sensor systems, from small robotics platforms like drones and expanding to new markets such as defense, airspace security, and more. There are enormous numbers of new applications for this kind of solution, many of which have simply not been viable until now. Building a product team and roadmap is no easy task and can be frustrating at times when things aren’t going as planned, but also can be one of the most rewarding experiences when you see concepts come to reality in front of you.
We now have over 25 people onboard, with some of the most talented people I have ever met – and we’re still growing. We’re building incredible products that have all stemmed from the ground-breaking baseline prototypes developed by co-founder and chief scientist, Professor José Martinez at Northeastern University. These include breakthrough sensing and communications technology and a software framework that powers everything from swarms of UAVs to hybrid networks of sensors, robots, and people. Stay tuned for the roll out of these products in the months to come.
In retrospect, my first year at MatrixSpace has been exhilarating to say the least. It has been like riding a mega-roller coaster – but the ups and downs are what make being part of an ambitious startup so much fun. As you all saw yesterday, we are officially bringing the company out of stealth mode and beginning to announce our products to the world.
We’re all beyond excited to finally launch and share with the world how we will help usher in a new era of intelligent systems and transform markets.
